About CRSA :

CRSA is a transversal structure across several UM6P Programs. Research within the center is organized around several major areas that aim to ensure the challenging Food and Water security goal in Africa, with a special focus on developing methods/tools that use multi-source remotely sensed data. The research aims to improve our understanding of the integrated functioning of continental surfaces and their interaction with climate and humans, with emphasis on sustainable management of natural resources (soil, land, water, agriculture) in the context of Climate Change. One of the centre’s goals is to provide a set of services and operational products to users (local, national and international) that aid in the decision support of water and food systems.

Job description:

We are seeking a highly skilled data scientist engineer to lead our efforts in developing and implementing predictive models for crop yield using data mining and machine learning techniques. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting and analyzing large datasets, identifying patterns, and building predictive models that can accurately estimate and forecast crop yield. The data scientist engineer will be required to work closely with cross-functional teams, including, project investigators, agronomists, software engineers, and product managers to ensure that the models are integrated effectively into our crop management products.

Key duties:

• Develop and implement predictive models for crop yield using data mining and advanced learning techniques.
• Collect, process, and analyze large datasets, including satellite imagery, weather data, and other environmental factors that may impact crop yield.
• Identify patterns and trends in the data that can be used to improve crop yield prediction accuracy.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate the models into our crop management products.
• Develop and maintain data pipelines and workflows to ensure efficient and accurate data processing.
• Use statistical analysis and visualization tools to communicate findings and insights to stakeholders.
• Stay up-to-date with the latest research and developments in data science, machine learning, and agriculture to continuously improve our models and methodologies.
• Mentor and train junior data scientists on data mining and machine learning techniques.
• Manage project’s work packages and deliverables, ensuring that timelines and goals are met.

Desired skills and experience

• Master's or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in data mining and machine learning, preferably in the agriculture industry.
• Strong knowledge of programming languages, such as Python or R, and data analysis libraries, such as Pandas, NumPy, and Scikit-Learn.
• Experience with big data processing tools, such as Apache Spark or Hadoop.
• Familiarity with geospatial analysis and satellite imagery data.
• Strong understanding of statistical analysis and predictive modeling.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong project management and leadership skills.
