Job Summary

The Research Center on Algal Biotechnology (RCAB) at University Mohammed VY Polytechnic (UM6P), Laayoune City, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Technician in Algae Cultivation. As an Algae Culture Technician, you will play a key role in supporting the cultivation and maintenance of algae cultures for various research, development, and production purposes. Working under the supervision of senior scientists or engineers, you will be responsible for executing algal cultivation protocols, monitoring culture conditions, and assisting in data collection and analysis. This position requires a strong attention to detail, good laboratory practices, and a willingness to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Execute standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the cultivation, propagation, and maintenance of algal cultures in laboratory and pilot-scale settings.
  2. Prepare culture media, inoculate algae cultures, and monitor growth parameters, such as temperature, light intensity, pH, and nutrient concentrations.
  3. Conduct routine monitoring of algal cultures for contamination, stress responses, and growth dynamics, documenting observations and reporting any deviations to supervisory staff.
  4. Assist in the setup and operation of photobioreactors, raceway ponds, or other algal cultivation systems, ensuring proper functioning and maintenance of equipment.
  5. Harvest algal biomass at specified time points, using appropriate techniques for cell separation, concentration, and preservation.
  6. Assist in sample preparation, analysis, and characterization of algal biomass, including measurements of cell density, biomass productivity, lipid content, and biochemical composition.
  7. Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures, data, and inventory of culture stocks, reagents, and equipment.
  8. Collaborate with research scientists, engineers, and other team members to troubleshoot technical issues, optimize cultivation protocols, and contribute to experimental design and planning.
  9. Follow laboratory safety protocols, including handling of hazardous materials, proper waste disposal, and adherence to regulatory guidelines and quality standards.

The Research Center on Algal Biotechnology (RCAB) is a new component of the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P). It is located in Laayoune City and constitutes a structure of practical-based research with a vision of offering versatile infrastructure for cultivation and conversion of algae based on merging biotechnology, environmental science, and sustainability. Driven by innovation, sustainability, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the center aims to bridge research and practical applications for the development of a large spectrum of applications in agriculture, cosmetical, pharmaceuticals, feed and food industry, bioremediation, climate change mitigation, and renewable energy production.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or technician diploma in biology, microbiology, biotechnology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a laboratory or industrial units, preferably in algal cultivation, bioprocessing, or related fields.
  • Familiar with aseptic techniques, sterile culture methods, and basic microbiological assays.
  • Hands-on experience with algal cultivation systems such as photobioreactors, raceway ponds, or closed-loop systems.
  • Experience in harvesting and processing algal biomass, including cell separation, concentration, and preservation techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment and instrumentation used in algal biotechnology research, such as spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and microscopes.
  • Proficiency in data recording, analysis, and reporting, including maintaining detailed experimental records and documenting observations.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols.
